General Safety Rules

Learning martial arts should be as safe as learning volleyball, baseball, basketball, tumbling or most other physical activities if safety rules are followed.  This class is pure self-defense training; all techniques may potentially inflict serious damage on your attacker or training partner.  The following rules must be adhered to for continuous training under my instruction:

1.                   Always consider the legal, moral and ethical ramifications of every technique, you will be held accountable.

2.                   Train only under a qualified instructor.

3.                   No randori (freeplay) without direct instructor supervision.

4.                   When your partner taps the mat, your body, or their own more than once, he is letting you know the technique works and he is yielding.  Release the pressure but maintain the hold.

5.                   Do not horseplay in class.  There is a danger of hurting others besides yourself and partner.

6.                   It is the throwers responsibility to see that the mat or area is clear before throwing.

7.                   Do not throw a beginner unless the instructor has given consent.

8.                   Do not practice strangulation or choking techniques unless a qualified instructor is present.

9.                   In the application of joint manipulation, once the hold is tight, apply pressure slowly and controlled until your partner submits, then release the pressure.  You must develop the feeling of sensitivity.

10.               Release the hold completely if your partner quickly moves in the wrong direction of escape.  His countermove may cause him injury.  Be considerate.

11.               Do not practice actually striking on pressure points for more than fifteen minutes per week.

12.               Only strike points on one side of the body in any given training session.  Do not switch sides.

13.               Do not apply cross body techniques, that is do not strike on corresponding points on opposite sides of your partner’s body.

14.               Be sure to learn and practice proper revival and healing techniques.

15.               Do not use pressure points on persons with health problems, on drugs/alcohol, or over age 40.

16.               Use the utmost restraint at all times.  It is not necessary to fully knock out someone to see the effect of pressure points.  Usually a light blow is sufficient to demonstrate effectiveness.

17.               Obtain your physicians permission before undertaking an intensive training course such as martial arts.

18.               Inform your instructor prior to class of any injuries or limitations.

19.               Students must be over 16 with parental consent.  Younger students may be accepted if parent or guardian will be in the same class.

20.                 For ongoing training students must be referred or recommended by other students, martial arts instructors, or interviewed by chief instructor before being accepted to train.

Violations of the above rules may result in permanent dismissal from Life Protection Arts and Sciences workshops, classes, and seminars.
